A Recent History of Sex Toys

By: Eric Schmidt

Sex toys have held a place in society since the ancient Greeks. They have had times of prosperity and times of shun. Here I will talk about sex toys in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Although sex toys and any literature that related to sexuality during the Victorian Era was considered extremely taboo, this era showed a great jump forward in sex toy 'technology'. Butt plugs, rubber dildos and even the first vibrators were introduced to us during the mid nineteenth century. Not only did new toys make it to the public but the sex toys that had been around for so long got a big boost in comfort and sanitation.
Not only were there sex toys to be used at home in place but there were spas that offered there 'services' through water jet massages and steam-powered vibrating devices. Men and women alike would go to these spas under the guise of 'medicinal treatments'.
Hysteria became an extremely common illness during this time period. In fact it was the most commonly diagnosed illness in the history of mankind. But luckily for those women diagnosed with this sickness there was only one real treatment, orgasm. There are many articles around the Net that discuss the history of Hysteria so I won't go into it here. Hysteria did however have a rather large impact on the world of sex toys, and in particular, vibrators. In order to treat Hysteria doctors had to either themselves provide 'pelvic massages' to the women or get someone close to her to do it, since masturbation at the time was very taboo. However this took a long time and so when the vibrator was invented in the late 1800's doctors wasted very little time before they started using them as they could reach the disired result in just a matter of minutes.
As more and more houses got electricity, more and more women were able to get vibrators for at-home Hysteria treatment. Then as battery powered vibrators started to come about, still more women were able to get relief from that nasty Hysteria at home. During the early 1900's you could start finding advertisements in catalogs such as Sears for vibrators, which the touted as an essential home utility. It wasn't long before it was no longer necessary to be diagnosed with Hysteria to be able to buy yourself a vibrator.
During the era of 'free love', specialized retail stores and magazines started popping up, providing a wide variety of sex toys to the public. These days you can get sex toys in almost every town in America or through one of the many online retail stores.
Sex toys continue to gain popularity as people become more and more open to variety in their sex lives. Men especially have seen a great jump in acceptable use of sex toys. For many years it was generally thought that only single, lonely men or homosexuals would use a sex toy, especially one that is meant for anal use. However, every day that passes more and more men realize that anal play can be very fulfilling and pleasurable.
Role playing and light bondage are also becoming ever more popular with today's couples, raising the sales of costumes and restraining devices. So if you haven't tried a sex toy by yourself or with your partner today is a great day to try something new!
