The first and most likely the largest problem people have when training their dog is being inconsistent. People often oversee the fact that it can take a dog some time to understand even simple ideas. The truth is that they are first looking to find what place they fit in. Because dogs have a pack mentality, they will try to first establish who is the leader of the pack. If you don't demonstrate that the leader is you, then they will assume that position. You first need to show them that you are in charge with firm and gentle consistency. They have to know their place in the family. Once that is established training them becomes much easier. If you stay consistent in your efforts then you will have success. Some dogs will pick things up faster than others but you need to stay with it..
This ties in to the next problem which is being too impatient. In this society, we want immediate satisfaction. If is not done right this second, then it is not worth the time. You cannot have an "I'm going to give up, this is too difficult" attitude. In essence, once you have established that you are in charge they will want to obey you. It is just a issue of communicating your intentions to them in the right way. It is always a smart idea to have some dog treats with you during the training also. Dogs tend to think with their tummy. It might take a little time to get your dog to do what you want them to, but the results are always worth it.
The last thing you have to consider is to treat your dog as a partner. It takes both of you to make it work properly. If you are frustrated with your dog they will sense it. This makes things much more difficult. The proper motivation has to be love. You are teaching them to be a companion for life. You of course are training them to fit into your environment, so it benefits you more. However, if you are treating your dog with love they will be happy just to please you. If you see training your dog as a means to enhance both of your lives then you are on the right track. If you just stay to fundamental training then that is all you need. After potty training and proper behavior training like not begging at the dinner table, the rest is optional. If you do decide to train your dog to do tricks, it will be much easier since they already have a solid foundation already.
