Guitar Playing for Bills Paying

By: Tihomir Opacic

I have a bad, bad habit of turning every passion of mine, every hobby into some sort of business. One of my first hobbies that went that way was guitar playing. I mean, who doesn’t want to be a rock star? Is there a better way to make money then doing something you like? Well, yes and no.

When I was young, I didn’t have a rent to pay, if I didn’t make enough money my parents were always there to help. So then I had a lot of time on my hands to experiment, and I wanted to make a guitar playing my profession, and gave it a shot. One thing you must do is practice regularly, work on those skills that pay the bills, so I did. I practiced at least three hours a day, I rehearsed with my band. We thought we were good enough authors to publish some songs we’ve had, so we’ve recorded an album. I can’t describe well enough the feeling of accomplishment that we’ve had after the record was done, it was just overwhelming, great feeling satisfaction.

Then we began our search for a publisher. After months of trying we failed. OK, I thought, maybe our hard rock songs weren’t commercial enough. Let’s sell our souls to the market and make a commercial pop record.

It’s been tough to make money just from playing gigs in local clubs, so I needed a job of any kind. I only needed to make it through next year or so, we’ll make it with our next record 100%! So we lived our rock star wannabe’s lives pretty miserably for the next 12 months, and you know what happened? We lost our enthusiasm. We realized that we can’t play the music we don’t like. We finished the record all right, but had no success with that one either and fell apart as a band.

I learned my lesson, and now it’s very clear to me that each dream is not meant to be fulfilled but if I didn’t try, I would still feel lousy today.

I’m glad I tried, and so should you my dear guitarist friends if you feel like so. Just make sure you play the music you like, give in with you heart and soul, and you might not succeed and make a living out of it, but it will be the fun ride of your life!

Today I still play my guitar and love music without the need to make anything out of it, but pure fun and joy.
